The statistic speaks for itself: 56,000 workplace injuries occur in the UK each month.
When we talk to organisations about workplace preparedness, the conversation is rarely just about slips, trips and falls. Increasingly, businesses are thinking about the unexpected situations that can affect any workplace at any time. Seizures. Diabetic emergencies. Severe allergic reactions. Cardiac incidents. Mental health crises. Situations that often happen without warning and can leave colleagues feeling unsure of what to do next. One theme we hear repeatedly is that organisations want their people to feel more confident. Not necessarily experts, but confident enough to recognise when something is wrong, know how to respond in those crucial first few minutes and support a colleague until further help arrives. What's changed noticeably over the last few years is the nature of the conversation. A few years ago, many discussions centred on compliance. Today, businesses are increasingly focused on resilience, wellbeing and creating workplaces where people feel looked after. The reality is that most workplaces will experience some form of medical incident at some point. The organisations that respond best are usually not the ones with the most paperwork. They're the ones who have thought about these situations in advance and had conversations about what they would do if the unexpected happened. Workplace preparedness is ultimately about people. It's about creating an environment where employees feel supported, managers feel equipped to act, and organisations are ready to respond when something unexpected occurs. As workplace wellbeing continues to rise up the agenda, it will be interesting to see how organisations continue to balance compliance requirements with the broader goal of building safer, more resilient workplaces. The organisations that respond best to medical incidents are rarely the ones that expect them. They're the ones who have taken the time to think about them before they happen.
